How often does my cat need professional grooming?

Regelmässige professionelle Katzenpflege hilft dabei, das Fell deiner Katze gesund zu halten, den Haarverlust zu reduzieren, schmerzhafte Verfilzungen zu verhindern und die Haut sauber zu halten. Aber wie oft sollte deine Katze in einen Katzensalon gehen? Die Antwort hängt von Rasse, Felltyp und Alter deiner Katze ab.

Regular professional cat grooming helps keep your cat’s coat healthy, reduces shedding, prevents painful mats, and keeps the skin clean. But how often should your cat visit a cat grooming salon? The answer depends on your cat’s breed, coat type, and age.

At Cat InStyle in Zurich, we work with many different breeds every week. Here’s our expert guide to the ideal cat grooming schedule for your cat.

Diese Katzen haben dichtes, pflegeintensives Fell mit viel Unterwolle, das sie nicht alleine in einem optimalen Zustand halten können. Ohne regelmässige professionelle Pflege entstehen schnell Knoten und Verfilzungen. Nur durch eine gründliche Wäsche im Salon können Haut und Fell vollständig gereinigt und das Fell locker und gepflegt gehalten werden.

Unsere Empfehlung: Vollpflege (Waschen und Ausbürsten) alle 2,5 Monate.

Für ein kleineres Budget empfehlen wir mindestens zwei Komplettwäschen pro Jahr (Frühling und Herbst) sowie zwei zusätzliche Bürstentermine dazwischen.

These cats have dense, high-maintenance coats with a substantial undercoat that they cannot keep in optimal condition on their own. Without regular professional grooming, knots and mats can develop quickly. Only a thorough wash in the salon allows us to properly clean both the skin and coat while keeping the fur light, healthy, and tangle-free.

Our recommendation: Full grooming (wash and brush-out) every 2.5 months.

For owners on a tighter budget, we recommend at least two full washes per year (spring and autumn), combined with two additional brushing appointments in between.

Viele Katzenhalter gehen davon aus, dass Kurzhaarkatzen weniger haaren. Tatsächlich gehören Britisch Kurzhaar und Exotic Shorthair zu den Rassen mit dem stärksten Fellwechsel. Durch ihren kurzen Haarzyklus verlieren sie laufend Haare und besitzen zudem sehr viel Unterwolle.

Unsere Empfehlung: Professionelles Waschen alle 3 Monate, um lose Unterwolle zu entfernen und die Haarmenge in der Wohnung deutlich zu reduzieren.

Dies ist besonders wichtig bei Katzen, die sich zu Hause nicht gerne bürsten lassen.

Many cat owners assume that short-haired cats shed less. In reality, British Shorthairs and Exotic Shorthairs are among the heaviest shedders of all cat breeds. Their shorter hair growth cycle means they shed continuously, and they also carry a large amount of dense undercoat.

Our recommendation: A professional wash every 3 months to remove loose undercoat and significantly reduce shedding in your home.

This is especially important for cats that do not tolerate brushing at home.

Diese naturnahen Waldkatzen unterscheiden sich stark von Individuum zu Individuum.

Maine Coon

Maine Coons produzieren häufig mehr Hautfett als andere Katzen. Dadurch wird das Fell schneller fettig und neigt zu Verfilzungen. Bürsten allein reicht meist nicht aus – regelmässiges Waschen ist entscheidend, um das Fell sauber und gepflegt zu halten.

Unsere Empfehlung: Vollpflege alle 3 Monate.

Sibirische Katze & Norwegische Waldkatze

Bei diesen Rassen hängt der Pflegebedarf stark vom einzelnen Tier ab.

Bleibt das Fell sauber, locker und nicht fettig, reichen zwei Pflegebesuche pro Jahr (Frühling und Herbst). Wird das Fell jedoch fettiger oder beginnen sich Knoten zu bilden, empfehlen wir vier Termine pro Jahr sowie regelmässiges Bürsten zu Hause.

Maine Coons often produce more skin oil than other breeds. As a result, their coat becomes greasy more quickly and is more prone to matting. Brushing alone is usually not enough – regular washing is essential to keep the coat clean, healthy, and free of tangles.

Our recommendation: Full grooming every 3 months.

Siberian & Norwegian Forest Cat

For these breeds, grooming needs depend largely on the individual cat.

If the coat remains clean, light, and non-greasy, two grooming appointments per year (spring and autumn) are usually sufficient. If the coat becomes greasy or starts developing knots, we recommend four appointments per year, with regular brushing at home between visits.

Mit zunehmendem Alter fällt es vielen Katzen schwerer, sich selbst gründlich zu putzen. Zudem produziert die Haut häufig mehr Fett, wodurch das Fell schneller strähnig wird und leichter verfilzt.

Unsere Empfehlung:

Krallenschneiden alle 2 Monate
Vollpflege oder Ausbürsten alle 2–4 Monate, abhängig vom Zustand des Fells.

As cats age, many become less thorough with their self-grooming. Older cats may also produce more skin oil, causing the coat to become greasy, clump together, and mat more easily.

Our recommendation:

Nail trimming every 2 months
Full grooming or brush-out every 2–4 months, depending on the condition of the coat

Für alle Rassen, die oben nicht aufgeführt sind, richtet sich der ideale Pflegeintervall nach Fellstruktur und Pflegezustand.

Hat deine Katze viel Unterwolle oder neigt zu fettigem Fell, empfehlen wir eine Vollpflege (Waschen und Ausbürsten) alle 3 Monate.

Bleibt das Fell leicht, sauber und frei von Verfilzungen, genügen zwei Termine pro Jahr – idealerweise im Frühling und Herbst.
